“This design isn’t nice at all”

“What a great effort, how about you make the primary color green instead of red since you are designing for an Agro App”

Looking at these feedbacks we can see one which is actionable and user centered. The first feedback is not encouraging while the second appreciated the designers work and at the same time explaining the reasons for the feedback

Now let’s stick with the second feedback, and look at these two response.

“ I used the red color because I like it”

“Thanks for your observation I will look into it”

The first designer is putting his personal preference over what the user is used to, while the second person considers changing the design.

Feedbacks and how we respond to them is very important in UI/UX and it’s continuous from the start to the apex of one’s UX career . Before you give feedbacks you should ask yourselves questions like:

Do I find it easy to give constructive feedbacks on others people’s design?

Am I always open to feedbacks?

If your answer is yes to these two questions then you are on the right track.

Benefits of receiving feedbacks

It improves your design: when you receive constructive feedbacks you will have to iterate your designs and that makes it come out nicer and user friendly.

It boosts your confidence: Feedbacks help boost your confidence when you get used to it. It would help you understand more about designs and increase how you will present them knowing well that you followed the best practices.

It widens your view on designs: When feedbacks are giving about what you don’t know you get to know them and learn more about them, this would help you broaden your design perspectives. Let’s say you designed a food ordering app and someone mentions Jakob’s law when they discover that your design doesn’t use the layouts people are used to when it comes to other ordering apps, this would breed curiosity and broaden your knowledge of one of the best practices of UI/UX.

There are various tips to giving feedback but let’s talk about some of them.

Back your feedback with reasons: When giving feedbacks you should have reasons to support your feedback and not say things like “I don’t like the red color you used” you should say something like “the red color doesn’t go with the Medical App you are designing for as red may mean danger which is the opposite of what we want the users to perceive”

Be concise and clear : When giving feedbacks make sure you are brief and talk only about the parts you would like to give feedbacks on using clear terms.

User centered: The feedback you are giving should be user centered and not based on bias or personal preference.

Feedback is very important in UX and it’s constructiveness is also of utmost importance.
